Description

The story of Annie Sullivan and her student, Helen Keller, who lost her sight and hearing at the age of 19 months. With compassion, humor and dramatic tension, The Miracle Worker explores the volatile relationship between a lonely teacher and her headstrong charge.

Historical Notes

Written by William Gibson. Adapted from his 1957 Playhouse 90 teleplay. Based on Hellen Keller's autobiography The Story of My Life (1903). Premiered on Broadway on October 19, 1959, at the Playhouse Theatre with Anne Bancroft as Anne Sullivan, Patty Duke as Helen Keller, and Patricia Neal as Kate Keller.


A special preview night performance was offered on March 6, 1975, for high school students as well as clients and staff of the Rehabilitation Center For The Blind.
According to a news release, the Playhouse staged The Miracle Worker "some years ago" as a presentation for the Florida Theatre Conference "Theatre Festival" with Sister Marie Carrol directing a cast from Barry College of Miami.
